What does BARF stand for?
BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones and Raw Feeding. You may also hear it referred to as “RMBD” which stands for Raw Meats based diet.
How do I get started feeding BARF?
The first thing you should do is some reading/research on feeding a raw diet. There are quite a few books published and plenty of online resources. While it seems daunting and the information you find may be overwhelming once you take the leap you will find it very easy to prepare and feed.
Below is a simple guide on how you should transition your pet to BARF food if you have been feeding them another form of food like kibble or cooked food. By following this simple method it will help ensure you pet adapts best to their new diet and avoid any stomach issues.
How much BARF food do I feed?
The recommended feeding rate is between 2-3% of the ideal adult body weight. Whilst this is a guide only, some dogs may need their intake reduced if they are gaining weight, and others may need it increased due to energy levels, metabolism etc. Dogs like humans are all different, one dog may be able to eat a lot of food and not put on weight, whereas another may gain too much weight on the same amount of food.

What does “Human Grade” mean?
This basically means that the same food you would buy at the shop or local markets for you and your family, is the same food we use for our Canine Country products.
All our red and white meats are sourced from local suppliers, all Australian owned and grown. Our vegetables are also sourced from local markets, all Australian grown.
Do your minces have bones in them?
Some selected products do contain soft, crushed bone & cartilage to maintain healthy calcium/phosphorous ratios in our recipes.
Is there any offal in your BARF recipes?
Our Canine Country BARF recipes do not contain offal. Whilst many BARF diets typically do include 5-10% of offal in their products based on standard raw feeding practices, there is a good reason Canine Country chooses not to include offal in their recipes. Firstly, many dogs do not like the smell or texture of offal in raw form, which can sometimes deter them from eating the food.
Secondly, due to genetic or inherited issues, many breeds cannot tolerate the higher purine content that offal offers. These breeds include Dalmatians, Beagles, Bulldogs, Basset Hounds, Cocker Spaniels, Bichon Frise, Miniature Schnauzers, Lhasa Apso, Miniature Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers and Dachshunds (amongst others).
We offer Kangaroo & Goat offal products separately in Portion Packs. These protein sources offer the highest quality offal with the slightest chance of allergic protein reaction.
We do this to give all pet owners flexibility and full control of their pet’s offal intake based on the pet’s individual tastes and tolerance.
How long does your BARF food last?
Frozen, our recipes have a recommended use by date of 12 months. When thawed and stored in the fridge, we recommend not feeding it to your pet any longer than 24-48 hours.

Yes, we have accreditation with Safe Food Queensland (SFQ).

Are there any preservatives?
No, we do not add any preservatives or additives to our BARF recipes.
Why is my dog drinking less water daily?
There is absolutely no reason to be concerned. Raw food is full of naturally occurring water! All the moisture needed to digest raw food is contained in raw food!
Is my dog or myself at risk of bacterial infections from raw food?
Dogs have a very different digestion system to humans. It is designed to cope with a certain level of bacterial contamination and food moves through it much more quickly. A happy, healthy dog is much less likely to present a health risk to humans, but sensible hygiene precautions must still be followed when feeding raw pet food ensure no bacteria can cause issues for you or your family.
I’ve noticed my dog pooping less and it’s white. Is this normal?
Yes, this is completely normal for a dog on the BARF diet. The reason your dog is pooping less is because most of the food he is now ingesting, is being digested properly which means less waste. The raw meaty bones account for it turning white. Straining while pooping a little bit can help express the anal glands, which would normally be done by your vet.
Is it true that my vet bills will decrease drastically, if almost not at all? Why is this?
Yes, you will find that vet trips will decrease dramatically as your dog’s body becomes accustomed to its new food. The main reason being is that all toxins from commercial food have been removed from your dog’s body and their immune system is becoming greatly enhanced, eliminating many common ailments that you might normally make a vet appointment for, such as dry & itchy skin, many allergies, skeletal problems, teeth cleaning & flea remedies.
Is Canine Country food suitable puppies and kittens?
Yes, we recommend starting your puppy on our Puppy Mince product which is specially formulated to provide the essential fats and protein through Chicken, Beef or Roo including select fruits and vegetables.
For Kittens, any of our Feline Chicken or Feline Roo recipes will help give them a healthy start to life.
